Writing Expectations
Students in Room 5 are starting to write their second (!) story. We have created our rubric and talked about the expectations to receive a 2, 3, or 4 star in writing. Today we did our first self-assessment and we will talk with Mrs. Halsall next week about how our self-assessment aligns with her assessment. From here, we will take her feedback and make improvements for our next story. We can't wait to share our next story with you at student-led conferences in March!

100th Day of School
Tuesday, 20 February 2018
Hot and Cold Temperatures
As part of our Science we are learning about hot and cold temperatures. Last week we experimented with "blubber" and talked about how it is a good insulator for animals. Today we talked about what makes a good insulator. Pictured above are examples of three of insulators we talked about. We challenge you to create your own insulator at home and bring it in to the classroom next week to share with everyone.
After our lesson about insulators we also talked about what happens to snow/ice when heat is applied. Ask your child about what we discussed and how we made the snowman melt.

100th Day Celebration
Next week we will be celebrating our 100th day of school. This is a big deal in Grade 1 and 2 as it aligns so nicely with our math curriculum - counting to 100, understanding place value, etc.
As part of our celebration we will be doing special 100th day activities and we're asking that each student bring in 100 objects - they can be a collection of 100 things (all pebbles) or an assortment (10 marbles, 10 pebbles, 10 hair elastics, 10 toy cars, etc.). All 100 items must fit into a ziploc bag so please ensure the items are not too large.
Please have all 100 items here on Wednesday, February 21 for our 100th DAY OF SCHOOL!

Me to We
Me to We Club Fair Day
The Me to We Club students are organizing a “CJP Fair” on Tuesday, February 13th. The objective of this fair is to raise money for the pillar we are supporting this year: Education in Sierra Leone. Please visit the following website to find out more information: http://www.freethechildren.com/international-programming/our-model/
The Me to We Club students have organized some very fun games and activities, including a target shooting game, Nerf shooter game, relay races, pin the penguin, a hockey shooting game, and a beanbag toss challenge. Please help us meet our goal by giving your child some change (not pennies) to bring to school on February 13 so they can participate in the fun and games. Games will cost between 25 cents to 1 dollar. We do not currently have change on hand as we recently made a donation to the bank. NO BILLS PLEASE.
Thank you,
Me to We Club

Winter Walk
Winter Walk
It was a beautiful afternoon for our schools annual Winter Walk. The whole school got out and walked around the field from 2:05-2:20. Following the walk we played outside for recess time.
Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather everyday.
Weekly Math Game
Tens Go Fish
This week we are introducing another math game with the focus of making ten. Making ten is an excellent mental math strategy. The idea behind playing games is to improve fluency so everyone can benefit from practice making 10. Have fun playing with numbers.
If this is too challenging you could play regular Go Fish to reinforce numbers.Added challenge - Play where you can use more than 2 cards to make ten.

Fort Calgary!
Ask me about our field trip to Fort Calgary:
-Why was Fort Calgary's location chosen? What is special about the spot?
-What were the first houses/buildings built from when the NWMP and the first settlers arrived?
-Who lived in this area before the NWMP and first settlers arrived?
-Talk about the building we built. How did was it built?
-Talk about your training as a Northwest Mounted Police constable.
-Talk about the play you were in. Which character were you?
-What interesting things did you see in your museum tour?
