Math Night

Wednesday, November 15th

Math Night

The first CJP Celebration of Learning will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 15th from 6:30pm - 8:00pm.  This night's theme will be "Math in Our World: Promoting Positive Math Experiences."  Students and families are invited to come and play a variety of math games, read math stories, solve puzzles and problems, and learn more about how math is used in everyday life.  Classrooms from Kindergarten to Grade 6 will be open and sharing ways that families can engage in meaningful and fun math activities.  Please be advised that not all classrooms will be open for this event, as a second Celebration of Learning will take place in Spring 2018.  If your child's classroom is not open for our November celebration, you are still encouraged to stop by.  There will be a variety of math activities for everyone to enjoy.  All CJP families are invited to attend this fun and interactive celebration!

Jack and the Beanstalk

Building Tall Towers for Jack

Students worked in groups to complete this STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) challenge. The task was inspired from the Calgary Opera performance that we saw this morning of Jack and the Beanstalk. We read a different version of the story in class and then worked on our challenge.

Sorting Building Materials

Sorting Process

Today we looked at the materials that students have brought in for our Building Things unit. We worked in groups to sort the materials. Students then had the opportunity to see how other groups sorted their items. As a whole group we created 6 categories for the items. We noticed that room 4 requires more fasteners (tape, paperclips, rubber bands etc.) and room 5 requires more decorations. Please send in more items for us to build. We will be using these materials on Thursday to build houses.

Problem Solving with Patterns

We're working on patterns and problem solving. This is just one example of what we've be doing. This is also something that you'll see in Room 4/5 if you come to math night, next Wednesday! Hope to see you there!

We need your help!

Today we started brainstorming materials that would be good to build with. Over the next couple weeks we will be working on Building Things in the classroom, as part of our Science curriculum. Please help us out by contributing some of these materials to the classroom. We will be sorting the materials and discussing what makes them a good building material, as well as, how we will build with them. Then we'll work together to make houses, structures, boats, and other things!

Math games help us learn!

Today we learned math games to help us reinforce our understanding of different number concepts.  Room 5 used ten frame cards to help us visualize numbers, which will help us with our mental math.  (For example:  Eight is 5 and 3.  It is also, two less than ten.)  We also played games where we compared the quantity of numbers using the terms greater than and less than. Room 4 used dice and game boards to play Pumpkin Bump, Boo Bump and Catch the Ghost to practice adding skills.

We will be having a Celebration of Learning evening, where you will have an opportunity to come to our classrooms to learn more about the math games we are playing. Our Math Game Family Night will be on Wednesday, November 15th between 6:30-8pm.  We hope to see many of you there.

Halloween Fun

We had a wonderful day today! For our Montessori Work Period students were given some special choices. In the afternoon we had our parade and a dance party with our buddies. We also played a new math game called BUMP.
