Investigating Communities and Field Trip

Both room 4 and 5 have begun exploring what a community is to get us prepared for our Social Studies Unit: A Community in the Past

Some of our initial ideas:

A community is helping each other.  Helping people that need help or are hurt. Ayden

A community is a group of people who help take care of different places, like a firefighter gets people out if their house is on fire. Joshua

A community is where all your family and friends gather together and talk. Audrina

A community is a building of people, like a school community or a work community that work together.  Zoe

We have learned that a community is a complex concept which can describe a variety of things.  It not only describes our neighbourhood and the places we work, live and play, but also groups we belong to like cultural groups or our school community.

Talk with your child about the different groups they belong to.  Are they part of a cultural or religious group?  Do they participate in an organization like Scouts? Are they apart of a sports/recreation group?

Some student were also unsure of which neighbourhood they live in.  Our school is situated in the neighbourhood of Brentwood, but we have students whom travel from communities like Panorama Hills to participate in the Montessori program.  Which neighbourhood do you live in?

On February 6th, our classes will visit Fort Calgary to explore Calgary's history.  Please look in your child's backpack for the permission forms.  We hope to have them all back before interviews.

Have a great weekend!
